Concerned about contaminants and the taste of their drinking water, millions of Americans are turning off the tap. As a result, bottled water has become a leading source of hydration.

The popularity of bottled water is skyrocketing.

  • Consumption of bottled water in the United States has more than doubled in the last ten years, from 13.5 gallons per person in 1997 to 29.3 gallons per person in 2007.
  • Bottled water is the now second only to carbonated soft drinks in annual sales, with 9.4 billion gallons estimated to be sold in 2008.
  • Americans will spend $12.5 billion on bottled water in 2008-is it worth it?

Bottled water is not as healthy as many people believe.

  • 25% of bottled water is nothing more than reprocessed municipal water.
  • 22% of bottled water brands tested in one study contained contaminants above state health limits.
  • Reverse osmosis used to “purify” some bottled water strips everything out of the water-the bad, but also the good. Healthy minerals are eliminated as the natural levels in water are altered and the water is now acidic which can be detrimental to your health.

The pH level of bottled water is not optimal.

  • While the FDA tests both bottled water for impurities, it is not required to monitor the water’s pH level.
  • Neutral water has a pH balance of 7 and an ideal pH level for drinking water 9.5.
  • Dr. Robert O. Young tested 60 of the best-known bottle water brands in the world and found that only two had a pH level at or above 9.5, and 30 (including best-known brands such as Fiji, Aquafina, and Perrier) had a pH level below 7.0, meaning they actually are acidic.[1]
  • The age of bottled water affects its pH level, as do changes in temperature and exposure to oxygen.

Plastic bottles harm the environment.

  • Most plastic water bottles are not recycled. The vast majority (80%) of the 1.5 million tons of plastic used globally each year in water bottles ends up in landfills, since many bottles are consumed on the go, outside the home
  • The distribution of bottled water by truck and rail burns fossil fuels and results in the release of thousands of tons of harmful emissions.
  • The filtration and processing of bottled water consumes large amounts of electricity.
  • The plastic used to make water bottles-polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-is derived from oil and generates 100 times the amount of toxic emissions as the same amount of glass.

The higher the pH level, the ORP (antioxidant level), and mineral content in water, the more benefits the body will receive.

Carbon Filters

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous, creating a very large surface area that is available for chemical reactions. GAC absorbs many compounds, including many toxic compounds. Many household water filters use activated carbon to eliminate organic contamination, unpleasant taste, or unpleasant odors the drinking water. Household filters for drinking water sometimes contain silver to release silver ions which have an anti-bacterial effect. Catalytic granular activated carbon cartridges are more effective than standard granular activated carbon and carbon block cartridges at removing hydrogen sulfide and chloramines.

UV for Disinfecting drinking water
UV radiation can be an effective viricide and bactericide. Disinfection using UV radiation is commonly used in wastewater treatment applications and is finding an increased usage in drinking water treatment. Many bottlers of spring water use UV disinfection equipment to sterilize their water. Solar water disinfection is the process of using PET bottles and sunlight to disinfect water.New York City has approved the construction of a 2 billion gallon per day ultraviolet drinking water disinfection facility. There are also several facilities under construction and several in operation that treat waste water with several stages of filters, hydrogen peroxide and UV light to bring the water up to drinking standards. One such facility exists in Orange County California.It used to be thought that UV disinfection was more effective for bacteria and viruses, which have more exposed genetic material, than for larger pathogens which have outer coatings or that form cyst states (e.g., Giardia) that shield their DNA from the UV light. However, it was recently discovered that ultraviolet radiation can be somewhat effective for treating the microorganism Cryptosporidium. The findings resulted in two US patents and the use of UV radiation as a viable method to treat drinking water. Giardia in turn has been shown to be very susceptible to UV-C when the tests were based on infectivity rather than excystation. It has been found that protists are able to survive high UV-C doses but are sterilized at low doses.A process named SODIS has been extensively researched in Switzerland and has proven ideal to treat small quantities of water using natural sunlight. Contaminated water is poured into transparent plastic bottles and exposed to full sunlight for six hours. The sunlight treats the contaminated water through two synergetic mechanisms: Radiation in the spectrum of UV-A (wavelength 320-400 nm) and increased water temperature. If the water temperatures rises above 50 °C, the disinfection process is three times faster.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a separation process that uses pressure to force a solution through a membrane that retains the solute on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other side. In water treatment, RO removes not only contaminants, but also minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium that are essential for good health. Reverse osmosis is not beneficial for producing drinking water. It produces water that is “clean” but also “dead”, lacking the healthful benefits of natural drinking water. Rather than being pH-neutral or having the alkalinity that is good for the body, reverse osmosis water is acidic. To maintain its pH balance, the body must pull minerals from other tissues to neutralize acids. Long-term consumption of reverse osmosis drinking water can lead to mineral deficiencies in the body, with resulting health risks.

In some areas, reverse osmosis is necessary to remove contaminants. We offer a range of reverse osmosis systems for these purposes. We recommend that water from the reverse osmosis system then be processed through a LIFE IonizersTM water ionizer to restore alkalinity to the drinking water.


Distillation involves boiling the water to produce water vapor. Organic materials, minerals, and other solutes are not normally vaporized; only the water molecules are. With the solutes left behind in the boiling water, the water vapor is 99.9% pure. The only contaminants that can pass through distillation with the water molecules are contaminants with similar boiling points as water. A few droplets of un-vaporized liquid can be carried by the vapor as well. Since all solutes are left behind during vaporization, distilled water does not contain the minerals that benefit the body. Distilled water is “dead” water.

Once the water has been purified, the ionizer passes an electrical current through the water. This process, known as electrolysis, divides the water into two streams; one with alkaline minerals for drinking and the other with acidic minerals for sanitizing. How Ionizers Work to Deliver Better Nutrition and Hydrate the Cells More Efficiently 

First developed in Japan in the 1950s, water ionizers use an electrical charge to split water into alkaline water (with a pH above 7.0) and acidic water (with a pH below 7.0). The higher the pH of the drinking water, the more effective it is at combating the damaging effects of acids in the body.

The process of electrolysis
